In order to get started in building a website you must
first have two things: (1) a domain name and (2) hosting space. This tutorial will help walk you through the process of choosing and registering your domain name, then purchasing hosting with Design by Kendall’s preferred hosting company, HostGator.com.
What is a domain name?
To put it in simple terms, a domain name is what comes after the www. in a web address. Chances are, you type them everyday. Google.com, Cancer.org and Whitehouse.gov are all examples of domain names. Your domain name will serve as an “address” for your website so it good to choose something easy to remember and spell. Check out this insightful article from SmashingMagazine.com for more tips on how to choose a domain name.
After you’ve chosen a domain name you can run it through whois.net to ensure it is not already taken.
There are a plethora of registrar options available when purchasing domain names. (You’ve more than likely heard of GoDaddy.com.) In this case, we will register with HostGator.com to keep our hosting and domain packages together and keep things simple.
Like your domain is your website’s “address,” your hosting space is it’s house. Everything on the web is sitting on a server somewhere. Internet service providers offer space to “house” the data, images and other files that make up your website and make it viewable for other users on the internet.
What is this going to cost me?
Since I know it’s on your mind, we’ll get this out of the way before proceeding. Domain registration and hosting are recurring costs that are just a part of creating and maintaining a website. Domain registration can cost anywhere from $7 to $25 per year. (All domains with Host Gator cost $15 per year.)
depend on the amount of space, bandwidth and features you require; however; a basic plan should be acceptable for most small buisnesses and blogs. Basic plans usually range from $5 to $8 per month but can be lowered by purchasing yearly packages. (Design by Kendall highly recommends purchasing at least a year of hosting.)
Host Gator offers two basic plans: Hatchling and Baby. If you anticipate hosting more than one site or domain, you should choose Baby. Otherwise Hatchling should do.
